Date: 11/01/1996 Yves-Thibault de Silguy likes to stay one step ahead of the rest. For a moment it looked as if the Economics Commissioner had been outdone by his own Chef de Cabinet Xavier Larnaudie-Eiffel, who was awarded the prestigious Ordre de Mérite by his nation for services to France above and beyond the call of duty. But a proper balance was restored weeks later, when French Prime Minister Alain Juppé nominated Yves-Thibault for the even more prestigious Légion d'honneur - so prestigious is it that there is no higher French award. Presumably it was not handed out for services to the name of Europe's future currency. Some cynics are suggesting it was actually granted because the Commissioner could not be outranked in the national gong stakes by one of his own junior officers. |
