The prospect of a breakdown in law and order after nearly two months of protests against the 32-year rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh has caused most foreign embassies to encourage their citizens to leave Yemen. There have been no outward signs of progress in talks over a transfer of power and on 3 April 2011 security forces and regime loyalists clashed with protesters in the southern city of Taiz, making a breakthrough even less promising.

But another nightmare is weighing on the minds of many diplomats and analysts in Sana'a as the crisis continues. Yemen, which was struggling with a current account deficit and soaring unemployment before the protests erupted, now faces a combination of economic challenges.
