The BBC featured on the 16 May 2016 a day of live BBC coverage examining how the movement of people was changing the world. Ex-Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) chief Sir Richard Dearlove warned of a 'populist uprising' in European countries on the issue. He criticised the plan to allow Turkish citizens to travel to the EU without a visa. He also said 'shutting the door on migration is not an option'. He said the failure to meet the challenge of migration by the 'present configuration of 28 vastly differing national interests' suggested it may have outlived its historical role. Times newspaper columnist David Aaronovitch suggested that each of Sir Richard's criticisms of the EU's failings 'required more from the European Union and not less'. UNHCR special envoy Angelina Jolie Pitt said there was a 'race to the bottom' between countries showing how tough they were. |
