Date: 10/04/1997 Dutch central bank governor Wim Duisenberg, who takes over as president of the European Monetary Institute in July this year, is clearly not a man who suffers from false pride. If a job needs doing, be it ever so humble, he is happy to step in and help out. Thus it was that he popped out of the Noordwijk hotel conference room where EU finance ministers were lunching during their informal meeting last weekend like a man on a mission. Frazzled and clearly in a hurry, he demanded: “Where's the kitchen?” and dashed off in the direction of the building's culinary engine room. It turned out that two of the finance ministers had not been given any pudding and were getting fractious. But all's well that ends well. After Duisenberg's intervention, the pudding-less pair were soon tucking into their desserts. The incident marked him out as a no-nonsense trouble- shooter - just what the EMI will need in the months ahead. |
