AK Party circles were seeking to reduce the leaking of the cables to a conspiracy to overthrow the Turkish government. But initial predictions that the cables would spark a major crisis between Ankara and Washington had proven empty. Then it seemed that the often-critical assessments of Erdoğan and the AK Party had served the government well. The cables provided 'proof' that the AK Party government was not Washington’s poodle, as its critics had alleged. Yet the references to alleged corruption continued to resonate. |
