The elections for the European Parliament Presidency are getting close (for the period from January 2017 until mid-2019) and, what seemed an easy renewal of Martin Schulz’s mandate, has become a multifaceted race. The European People's Party (EPP) Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have their own plan to put one of them at the helm of the citizens’ institution and top-notch Members are already working to rally support for their candidature. So, if that were to happen, who would actually replace Schulz? This analysis compares the views of the potential EPP candidates with those of their colleagues in the EPP and other political groups on key topics. It shows which potential candidates are more 'central' in the EPP, and which are more likely to receive backing from the other political groups. |
