Poland’s communist successor party had seen its opinion poll ratings increase in 2018. This upturn in support came after the revival of debates about the country’s communist past prompted by government legislation affecting the interests of its core electorate. But as Aleks Szczerbiak wrote, the party’s leadership had failed to develop any new ideas or initiatives that could attract broader support beyond this declining group of former communist regime beneficiaries and functionaries. Without a political game-changer, the left would remain a marginal actor in Polish politics. |
