Western bid to allay Russia’s missile concerns

Report of a NATO-Russia summit, Sochi, Russia, 4 July 2011. The 29 nations of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) restated their commitment to pursuing cooperation on missile defence as well as cooperation in other security areas of common interest.

Nato’s plans to deploy ballistic missile defence from spring 2012 onwards was seen to threaten to derail a fragile thaw in relations with Russia, which was seeking guarantees that the system is not aimed at them.
