WHO was founded in 1948 to work for the attainment of the highest possible level of health by all peoples. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. It organises and carries out health programmes in nearly every country in the world – 193 Member States – and works with national governments and international aid agencies to reduce disease, improve health systems, fund medical research and provide emergency aid during disasters. It also works to improve nutrition, housing, sanitation and working conditions around the world. To allow WHO to concentrate on Member States’ specific problems, it has six regional offices, including the Regional Office for Europe. The Regional Office is made up of public health, scientific, technical and other experts, who work at its headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 5 out-posted centres and in country offices in 29 Member States across the Region. To accomplish its mission, the Regional Office is organized in a number of divisions and units that strive to obtain the best possible results in serving countries’ health needs. |
