The European Commission for the control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EUFMD Commission) was established in 1954 at a time when Foot-and-Mouth Disease was ravaging post-war Europe, as a special body under Article XV of the basic texts of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Commission is primarily a forum to foster cooperation between member countries and to co-ordinate their efforts to prevent and control FMD. It also provides technical expertise, epidemiological information and advice to member countries, assists in the development of international standards and harmonisation, and provides support for FMD control in areas which endanger the status of the member countries. |
