The European Environment Agency (EEA) and Microsoft, in May 2008, launched a new environmental information portal ‘Eye on Earth’, displaying the latest information on the water quality in bathing sites across Europe. Through its first application ‘WaterWatch’, the new portal allowed users to rate beaches and to share their comments with others. At the time of its launch, it included information on the water quality for more than 21,000 bathing sites throughout Europe. It was expanded in November 2009 to include a new application, 'AirWatch', which provides information on air quality, and again in December 2011, to include 'NoiseWatch'.

As part of the five-year partnership announced in May 2008, the EEA and Microsoft will continue to develop the Eye on Earth portal by adding new sets of environmental information.
