The European Medicines Agency (EMA) began operating in 1995 and is a decentralised agency of the European Union, located in London.* The Agency is responsible for the scientific evaluation of medicines developed by pharmaceutical companies for use in the European Union. The European Medicines Agency's main responsibility is the protection and promotion of public and animal health, through the evaluation and supervision of medicines for human and veterinary use. The mission of the European Medicines Agency is to foster scientific excellence in the evaluation and supervision of medicines, for the benefit of public and animal health. * Following the decision in 2016 by the United Kingdom to leave the EU the EU agencies based in the UK would need to relocate. Campaigning by a number of countries to secure one of these agencies began in 2017. A decision was expected by EU leaders in November 2017. |
