Summary: The Council of the European Union adopted on 19 December 2019 a set of conclusions relating to waste management in non-energy uses of nuclear technologies, such as spent fuel from research reactors, radioactive waste from the production of radioisotopes, hospital radioactive waste and others. Further information: The conclusions highlight the importance of minimising radioactive waste and of ensuring responsible and safe handling, storage and disposal of waste. While pointing out that it is the responsibility of the member states to have a national policy for radioactive waste management, the Council also recognises that in cases where national solutions are not available or practicable, shared services and facilities could be considered as a viable alternative. |
