This book has two broad purposes: the first is to give a full and up-to-date account of the institutions and issues involved in UK environmental policy. The second purpose is to identify and assess the effects of European integration on British environmental politics and policy. In relation to the first purpose the contributors cover a range of institutions from local authorities to central government, from pressure groups to quangos, as well as the different perspectives of environmental and business and industrial lobbies, and the role of science and public information on the environment. A range of policy sub-sectors is also covered, from pollution to conservation and from waste management to land-use, to provide a review of the issues and ideas in contemporary policy debates. With regard to their second aim, the contributors examine systematically the consequences for Britain of EU policies and laws in the environmental field and of Britain's involvement with EU institutions and with other Member States.
