Poland's parliament approved 21 July 2006 the establishment of a new financial super-regulator in a controversial move that threatens to diminish the role of the country's central bank. The creation of the Financial Supervisory Commission fulfils a campaign promise by the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), but the measure has been heavily criticised in Poland and by the European Central Bank.
