A Brussels taxi driver has already reaped the rewards of the British Labour Party's big push for power at the general election in the UK next spring.

We can only hope the cabbie paused long enough to appreciate the handwriting on the label of the splendid bottle of whisky which was left behind in the back of his car the other day.

The booze was destined to be a prize in a money-raising evening organised by expatriate Labour supporters determined to get Tony Blair in as prime minister. Blair and his deputy John Prescott had personally signed the bottle, presumably on the grounds that it would somehow add value to the contents.

Labour expats are undaunted by the loss - they are now campaigning hard to win victory for a chap called Johnny Walker.
