The Council of the European Union's Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper) agreed on 5 October 2016 a negotiating position on visa liberalisation for Georgia.

The Council took the view that the entry into forces of visa liberalisation for this country should be at the same time as the entry into force of the 'suspension mechanism'.

Other than that, the Council confirmed the Commission proposal adopted in March 2016. On the basis of this mandate, the Council was ready to start negotiations with the European Parliament, which had already endorsed the visa waiver in September.
