Police in Athens fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators hurling petrol bombs and stones as a 24-hour general strike gripped Greece on the 23 February 2011.

The street violence, the first since December 2010, highlighted fears of renewed social unrest if Greece failed to win better terms for repayment of debt at the European Council in March 2011.
