Summary: EU national leaders held a video conference on 19 June 2020, in which the focused on the proposed Recovery Plan for Europe, the relations between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) and on the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Further information: The European Council discussed the European Commission's revamped proposals for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027 and for a post-COVID recovery instrument also known as Next Generation EU. An in-person special summit was scheduled for mid-July to focus on these proposals. Leaders were also briefed on the discussions between the EU and UK on their future relationship, following a high-level meeting held a few days before via video conference. There was also an update on the state of play regarding the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, after which a political decision was made to roll-over existing economic sanctions. The plenary of the European Parliament held a debate on the outcome of this meeting on 8 July. |
