Summary: EU Ministers responsible for matters relating to the internal market and industry held a videoconference on 15 May 2020. Further information: There was an exchange of views on how to restore a fully functioning single market; how to achieve a quick recovery of those industrial sectors most hardly hit by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic; how to ensure the strategic autonomy of the EU in critical industrial sectors. Ministers also exchanged information on the economic impact of the crisis on the economy of their Member States, and stressed the need for a common EU approach which includes the longer-term recovery plan to be presented by the European Commission. Ministers showed their support for the recommendations set out by the European Commission on implementing and enforcing single market rules, as well as on barriers to the single market. Regarding the most affected industrial sectors, the Council argued that investment should be channelled into those fields presenting the greatest potential for innovation, growth and job creation. Some ministers defended the integration of the recovery plan with green and digital transition objectives. Some also called upon the Commission to ensure that flexibility in the application of state aid rules does not lead to greater economic discrepancies within the EU. Finally, ministers pointed to the need to ensure the EU's strategic autonomy in the aftermath of the pandemic. |
