Centre-right MEP Markus Ferber has called for Günter Verheugen, the European Commission vice-president, to resign, after the German magazine Bunte printed pictures of the commissioner entering the home of his female chef de cabinet Petra Erler at night and leaving the following morning.

Ferber told German newspapers: "[Paul] Wolfowitz resigned for similar reasons as president of the World Bank. Verheugen should follow this example." Verheugen’s spokesman declined to comment on Ferber’s statement or the pictures: "Everything that has to be said about this issue has already been said." Verheugen has denied that he is having a relationship with Erler.
