This discussion paper provides a review of the broad issues of child poverty, examining in particular the family as a resource in the eradication of poverty, given the provision of effective and appropriate support. It takes into account evidence from a wide range of research and brings together elements from 10 countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The paper highlights the need to listen to children and parents who face severe and persistent poverty in their daily lives, focusing on how the family can be strengthened to help cope with, and overcome, poverty and social exclusion.
