In bilateral meetings around the Group of Seven finance ministers' meeting in Rome on 7-8 July 2001, the US Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill, proposed international co-operation to tackle overcapacity in the global steel industry. US steel producers have been concerned about what they perceive as unfair competition from low-priced imports.
