In December 2011 the US threatened to take retaliatory action against the European Union unless the European Commission dropped its plan imminently to start charging any airline flying into the bloc for its carbon pollution. In a sharp escalation of tensions over the Commission move to bring aviation into its emissions trading system from 1 January 2011, Hilary Clinton, US Secretary of State, wrote to her European Commission counterpart, Catherine Ashton, and other top Commissioners, to 'strongly urge' the EU to halt or suspend its plan. It was also clear that four Chinese airlines would legally challenge Europe's new carbon emission taxes. However, the European Court of Justice in a judgement issued on the 21 December 2011 said that the directive including aviation activities in the EUâs emissions trading scheme is valid despite US, Canadian and other carriers arguing the charges violate climate change and aviation pacts. |
