US delegation in Brussels for high-tech policy talks

A PARTY of US Congressmen will meet political and business leaders in Brussels next week to discuss recent developments in the digital communications industry.

The six-strong delegation will take part in a one-day conference at the European Parliament next Wednesday (20 February).

Among the issues due to be discussed are internet tax, intellectual property rights, privacy and security.

One of the featured speakers at the event - the latest in a series organised by the Transatlantic Policy Network NGO - will be new Parliament President Pat Cox.

The Irishman has said he wants to champion closer ties between America and the European Union during his time in office.

The meetings aim to serve as an 'early warning system' to help avoid trade disputes and promote policy convergence.

The US delegation will be led by Virginia Republican Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the Congressional internet caucus.

It will also include Goodlatte's fellow Republicans Dana Rohrabacher (California) and Lamar Smith (Texas), as well as Democrats Rick Boucher (Virginia), John LaFalce (New York) and Martin Olav Sabo (Minnesota).
