US and EU in air traffic accord

The US and European Union agreed 18 June 2007 to work together to cut aircraft noise and pollution by pooling research funds and ensuring compatibility of air traffic control systems. Jacques Barrot, European Commission Vice-President responsible for transport, and Marion Blakey, Administrator of the United States Federal Aviation Administration - in the presence of aircraft industry representatives - launched a transatlantic emission-reduction initiative called AIRE.
