Summary: From the beginning of March 2019, France and Germany shared the rotating presidency of the UN security council (UNSC) for two months. Further information: As a founding member of the United Nations (UN) in 1945, France holds a permanent seat on the Council. Germany is a non-permanent member and was elected to serve on the Security Council for a two-year term throughout 2019-2020. The presidency formally passed on from France to Germany at the end of March, but there was no change in practice as both countries continued jointly to occupy the chair. This closer UN cooperation was agreed by France and Germany as part of the Treaty of Aachen to maintain their close cooperation. |
