Ukraine finds itself is a risky situation, as President Yanukovych’s policy of pursuing closer relations with both Russia and the European Union is in difficulty. The sentencing of former prime minister and rival Yulia Tymoshenko has disrupted negotiations with the EU and displeased the Russians. The fate of Ukraine is important for the EU and western influence in Eastern Europe.
