Viktor Yushchenko, the besieged pro-west president of Ukraine, appealed to the European Union and US on the 5 June 2009 to help prevent a 'constitutional coup', accusing his political rivals of plotting to monopolise power and strip citizens of the right to elect their next president.

Mr Yushchenko's plea came as the parties of Yulia Tymoshenko, Prime Minister, and Viktor Yanukovich, the opposition leader and former prime minister, moved towards a power-sharing pact ahead of a January 2012 presidential contest.
