UK welcomes measures to overhaul fleet / UK minister welcomes scheme to overhaul EU fisheries fleet

The European Commission launched proposals on 29 May 2002 to slash the size of the EU fleet, end state subsidies for introducing new vessels and boost EU funding to help fishermen find new jobs. The UK Fisheries Minister said that the UK fishing industry would be less hard hit than those in other Member States.
