The EU Action Plan for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) was adopted by the European Commission in May 2003 as part of the EU's response to the call for action at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburgy (2002), where the problem of illegal logging was identified as extremely urgent and one of the main obstacles in moving the logging industry towards sustainable logging. A consultation was launched by the United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in May 2005, to look at how the European proposal for a new licensing scheme to control timber imported into the European Community would affect UK stakeholders. Deadline for responses: 11 August 2005.
