UK Conservative Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed their opposition in September 2013 to suggestions that the European Commission might put forward proposals to fit cars and vans with hi-tech devices to stop them breaking the speed limit.

The European Commission said there were no concrete plans for such a proposal. The Commission said that the reports in certain UK newspapers 'may be referring to the stakeholders' consultation held in the framework of a study on speed limiters.
