Summary: Information Guide concerning the contest launched by the Conservative Party in July 2022 to select its leadership, following the resignation announcement of Boris Johnson. Further information: Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on 7 July 2022 that he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party, following a series of cabinet resignations after a succession of scandals involving Mr Johnson. The election of the new leader was expected to run over the summer. Mr Johnson further stated he intended to remain in post as Prime Minister until a new leader was selected. It was later announced that the new Conservative leader would be known on 5 September 2022. The leadership election comprises two stages - Conservative MPs first vote to choose two candidates, who later compete for votes from party members. The window for nominations took place on 12 July 2022, when each candidate required the support from at least 20 Conservative MPs to reach the first ballot. Eleven candidates initially declared their bid for leadership, but three of them eventually dropped out on 12 July. *page under development* |
