UK condemns BSE secrecy

Major steps are being taken to improve the handling of health scares, the UK government said after admitting a lack of openness over the possible risks of BSE. In its first formal response to Lord Phillips' report into the crisis, it said public confidence in food safety had plummeted in the wake of the scandal and only drastic steps could restore it.
