Tony Blair, UK Prime Minister, on 10 June 2005 said he was prepared to talk about the future of the UK's rebate from the European Union budget but only if President Jacques Chirac of France agreed to major farm subsidy reforms. Mr Chirac responded by rejecting any cuts to the EU's farm support budget, setting up a clash between the two leaders at the European summit, 16-17 June 2005. The hardening of positions in London and Paris has damped hopes of a budget deal at the summit.
