Uber stripped of London licence due to lack of corporate responsibility

Uber's application for a new licence in London was rejected by Transport for London (TfL) on the 22 September 2017 on the basis that the company was not a 'fit and proper' private car hire operator, in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks.

Uber’s chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, told Uber staff on that the company would appeal against the ruling. He said he disagreed with the decision but it was based on past behaviour. 'The truth is that there is a high cost to a bad reputation'.

Within a day more than 500,000 people had signed a petition, started by Uber, to urge TfL to reverse its decision not to renew the licence.
