Turkish power balance shifts Gul’s way

In May 2007 Abdullah Gul stood for election as the President of Turkey and sparked a political crisis. Mr Gul had declared his loyalty to Turkey's secular constitution. One military memorandum, several major street protests and one general election later, he tried again in August 2007.
