Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s party (CHP), launched a protest 'March for Justice' from Ankara to Istanbul on the 15 June 2017. The 450km march, led by the CHP's leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, was specifically protesting at the imprisonment of respected CHP politician Enis Berberoğlu for 25 years on the 14 June 2017. More generally, the CHP was protesting at the ferocity of the crackdown in Turkey following the failed coup of July 2016 during which thousands of academics, justice officials, military personnel and others have been dismissed from their jobs for their alleged links with the network of Fethullah Gulen. The marchers, which grew in numbers during the march, were due in Istanbul on the 9 July 2017 - a week before the first anniversary of the July 2016 coup attempt. The march ended in a rally in the city's Maltepe district, where Enis Berberoğlu was currently in jail. All eyes were on the response of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Earlier, he had accused the marchers of supporting terrorism. |
