Abstract: During the Balkans' crisis of the early 1990s, there were domestic attempts to influence Turkish policy by such ideas as neo-Ottomanism, Islamism and pan-Turkish nationalism. Nevertheless, Turkey's strategy was mainly shaped by national interests and special emphasis on remaining with the Western consensus on issues concerning Yugoslavia and the war in Bosnia. While Turkey came to voice criticisms on the shortcomings of Western policy, it did not break with the predominant approach of its allies. |
