Turkey held a general election on 7 June 2015. Sezin Öney and Emre Erdoğan take a final look at the campaign before the country headed to the polls. They wrote that politics in Turkey had taken a notable populist turn in recent years, with the 2015 election campaign becoming dominated by a personalised style of politics, particularly in relation to the current Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the leader of the pro-Kurdish HDP, Selahattin Demirtaş. A report by the Research Institute on Turkey – which relied on quantitative analysis of election surveys – showed that the outcome for the HDP in the election would have a greater impact on the future of Turkish politics than any other factor. |
