Article reports that Franco-Turkish relations were nearing crisis point in December 2011 amid increasingly strained ties between Ankara and the European Union. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s Prime Minister, wrote to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France warning that 'irreparable damage' would be caused by the passage of a bill making it a crime to deny that a genocide of Armenians took place during the last years of the Ottoman empire. Ankara has always denied that the mass murders of hundreds of thousands of Armenians almost a century ago constituted genocide. France warned Turkey against any commercial reprisals in the escalating dispute, reminding Ankara it had to respect its obligations under World Trade Organisation rules and its agreements with the European Union. |
