Turkey decided on 22 August 2016 to recall its ambassador to Austria, following a series of disputes between the two countries. Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that authorities were reviewing the country's relations with Austria as diplomatic tension rose. Media reported that a demonstration by supporters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) - allowed by authorities in Vienna - had further angered the Turkish government, triggering the decision. It further contributed to strained relations, following an earlier statement by Austria's government that EU membership negotiations with Turkey should be halted, considering the government's reaction to a failed coup on 15 July 2016. |
