Turkey protests resume in Istanbul after apology

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc apologised on the 4 June 2013 for the violent police response to earlier protest. Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters had taken to the streets of various cities in Turkey in early June 2013.

Nevertheless, police in Istanbul and Ankara used tear gas and water cannon against protesters later on the 4 June 2013 in a fifth night of anti-government demonstrations.

Activists in Turkey called on the 5 June 2013 for the sacking of police chiefs in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities over their forces' violent responses to protests.
