Report suggested that Turkey had opened disarmament talks with Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers party (PKK), January 2013. Turkey had previously admitted to talks with Mr Ocalan aimed at ending a hunger strike by jailed PKK members but this is the first time negotiations with a broader peace agenda were confirmed. In March 2013 jailed Kurdish rebel leader Abduallah Ocalan called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Kurdish militants from Turkish territory, ending months of secret negotiations between the leader and Turkey's spy agency. |
