After abandoning its prosecution of the novelist Orhan Pamuk on 23 January 2006, the Turkish Government was due to announce on 24 January 2006 a fresh attempt to break the deadlock over Cyprus. The case against Mr Pamuk had damaged Turkey's international reputation and threatened a serious rift with the European Union.
