This book brings together some of the leading analysts of Europe and the Middle East to explore the issues that have informed the relationship between the two regions. They evaluate the prospects for international relations between the Middle East, including North Africa and Turkey, and Europe in the changing climate of international relations after the Cold War. The contributors demonstrate that Europe's trade and commercial relations have been increasingly effective throughout the region, evolving strategies which work to ensure vital economic development between the two regions. But these economic strategies continue to be threatened by the lack of security in the region, by the dependence of both the Middle East and Europe upon US influence and by the growing divergence of European and US approaches towards the Middle East. Further chapters look at the question of Islam and Europe, Europe and the Iranian revolution, the European reaction to the crisis in Algeria and the situation in Turkey. |
