Politico published a feature on 23 July 2015 regarding an increase of the violation episodes by Turkey of Greece's airspace.

According to a report of the Greek military, Turkish fighter jets and military helicopters dramatically increased their incursions into Greek airspace in 2014, forcing the Greek air force to respond. This happened after several years of declining numbers of these violations.

Turkey and Greece recognize each other’s claim to a six nautical mile-wide zone of the Aegean Sea. However, specialists highlighted Turkish concerns that Greece might try to extend that to the full 12 miles permitted under international treaties. This would largely block Turkey from the Aegean. This adds to Greece's claims of 10 miles of air space around the islands, while Turkey recognizes only six miles.
