Protests over youth unemployment spread to several towns and cities in Tunisia in January 2016. Unemployment had worsened since the January 2011 Jasmine revolution.

Joblessness stood at 15%, higher than the 12% at the time of the revolution. The International Labour Organisation reported that among young people the figure was double the national average, at 32%, rising to 40% in rural areas.

On the 22 January 2016 a night-time nationwide curfew was imposed after four days of social unrest over high living costs and lack of jobs.
