Latvia is a place that still sounds like a mystery to many Europeans – a name on a map without specific colours or visual associations. The Latvian Presidency of the EU gives us an opportunity to challenge this situation and to reflect upon the true colours of Latvia and the Latvian people.

In these paintings, the unique relationship of Latvians with nature appears through a genuine reflection on everyday life: nature is everywhere. From the skyline of Riga, which serves as the background for wildlife on the river islands, to the numerous trees that populate these artworks. Nature is an integral part of the Latvian soul, binding the Latvian people to their lakes, to their forests, to their fields and their sky.

To their country. Through the paintings of local artists, this exhibition explores Latvia through its colours.
