Silvio Berlusconi can proudly claim to have held together Italy's longest-serving government since 1945. But his promise to see through his full five-year term, ending in mid-2006, received a serious blow on 2 July 2004 when Giulio Tremonti, his powerful Finance Minister, was forced out by two of the four parties within the fractious centre-right government coalition.
